18 Jan. 2007 – New support for green coffee extract benefits in weight management.

A specific composition of chlorogenic acids, in addition to other active molecules naturally found in green coffee beans, could be effective in weight management, reported a clinical study published in a peer-reviewed journal in October 2006.

Coffee, one of the most consumed beverages in the world, is believed to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a disease characterized by the mechanisms regulating blood glucose concentration dysfunction, which results in insulin resistance.  Insulin resistance is characterized by abnormal and prolonged hyperglycemia.

Several previous epidemiologic studies have shown that individuals with an average to high daily consumption of coffee, reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.  Other works have demonstrated that coffee consumption improved glucose tolerance, which led to a protective effect against the development of type 2 diabetes.

Additionally, various clinical studies have demonstrated that caffeine is not the active substance leading to the decrease in risk of type 2 diabetes observed in those who consume large amounts of coffee.  While caffeine is not the active substance protecting against blood sugar problems, the various authors of epidemiological studies suggest or agree that the chlorogenic acids do play a highly influential role in this.  In vitro studies show that chlorogenic acid – particularly 5-caffeoylquinic acid found in green coffee, inhibits the glucose-6-phosphatase which intervenes in blood glucose regulation.
However, the quantity of chlorogenic acids implemented in these studies would correspond to a daily consumption of several hundred cups of coffee, according to the type of coffee.  It clearly appears that the epidemiologic studies results are primarily linked to the synergic effect of coffee’s components rather than one constituent.

Berkem, French polyphenols specialist since 1964, extends its expertise in new active ingredients such as green coffee extract.
In collaboration with INRA (French National Institute of Agronomic Research), Berkem described for the first time the absorption and bioavailability of chlorogenic acids extracted from green coffee beans.

Berkem was also the first to carry out a clinical study which demonstrated that Svetol®, Berkem’s unique and water-soluble green coffee extract, has a significant fat burning action.
"Svetol® is capable of significantly reducing the body mass index (BMI) and significantly increasing the lean mass to fat mass ratio after 60 days of treatment," said Sophie Lafay, Nutrition Ph.D. of Berkem.

Svetol® is a natural water-soluble extract of decaffeinated green coffee beans obtained by a traditional extraction method.  Furthermore, Berkem uses green coffee beans, meaning a coffee non-denaturized by roasting, preserving all the benefits of the raw material.

"We always use a traditional process of extraction in order to preserve all the plant’s qualities and benefits," explained Benoit Lemaire, Business Director of Berkem.
"According to the clinical study, Berkem recommends a daily consumption of 400 mg of Svetol® in one or more doses, which should be adjusted depending on possible associations with other ingredients."

Successfully launched in Europe, Svetol® is the new active ingredient for weight management.  Svetol® is a food ingredient perfectly suited to dietary supplements, and could also achieve high success in a variety of foods, as well as beverages, chilled products, sweet and savory foods, among other products.
